The BD-17 Nugget has been design to accept a variety of engines. We recommend engines of 40 - 80 HP that have a weight of less than 160 lbs. At the present time we have installed a Japanese manufacture twin cylinder 4 cycle engine known as HKS-700. This is a 60 HP engine that weighs 110 lbs. We will be evaluating and flight testing a variety of engines, and expect by summer of next year to have four (4) different engines tested and offered for the BD 17. There are a variety of engines that have been developed for ultra light and small homebuilts that proven to be acceptable and airworthy. Some are two cycle and some are 4 cycle engines and each has its advantages and limitations. We will not be offering a power plant package until we have thoroughly test and evaluated the installation.

The HKS-700 has been a reliable, smooth running and relatively quiet engine. It has dual ignition with twin carburetors. Engine cooling is accomplished by both air-cooling the cylinder fins and engine oil cooling. The engine is approved to operate on automotive fuel and has a fuel consumption of just under 3 gallons an hour at 75% cruise power. We have installed on this engine a fix pitch Prince propeller of a 62-inch diameter. With the BD-17 aircraft kit, which includes the engine installation, we'll supply it complete. It will include the exhaust system, oil cooler, engine mounts, oil tank, and all associated hoses, clamps and fittings.
